Playin' Baseball
“Playin’ Baseball” is Ace Diamond’s all-killer, no-filler tribute to America’s pastime – a 12-song, 38-minute concept album that turns an entire baseball season into a rock ’n’ roll soundtrack. Released in 2009 on Allagash Country Records, the record mixes stadium-ready originals with beloved classics like “Centerfield,” “Glory Days,” “Ramblin’ Man,” and “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” all reimagined in Ace’s high-energy style.
Behind the shades and cowboy hat is Rich Gowell, a former minor-league ballplayer who grew up in New England and poured his real-life diamond experience straight into these songs. As Ace Diamond, he’s spent over four decades on stage as an internationally known singer-songwriter from Maine, tearing through rockabilly, country and rock ’n’ roll with what critics have called a “reckless abandon” style and electric energy that’s hard to match. Across his career he’s racked up around twenty Top-40 entries on the Hotdisc UK and other international charts and cut multiple albums with gold- and platinum-certified producer Harry King – the same seasoned team behind his later release “Baddest Gunslingin’ Man.”
“Playin’ Baseball” takes that veteran fire and points it straight at the ballpark. Every track is built for game day: from the opening rush of “Play Ball” to Red Sox-devoted anthems like “The Splendid Splinter,” “The Red Sox Are Back in Town,” “Good Time at Fenway Park Tonight,” and “The Mighty Boston Red Sox.” Reviews have highlighted the album as a spirited blend of baseball storytelling and toe-tapping rock ’n’ roll – a warm-up record for spring training that helps fans shake off winter and get “rock and rolled” right into the season.
If you love baseball, classic rock ’n’ roll, and that old-school, American-roots energy, “Playin’ Baseball” isn’t just another sports novelty CD – it’s a genuine concept album from a lifelong musician and real-deal ballplayer who knows the game from the inside out.
